Just out of curiousity, what do the following food idioms mean?

I believe that “to play gooseberry” is, nowadays, out to date. But I don´t know whether you can use this idioms in another situation.

Ok Nina.I´ve looked up this link and "to play gooseberry" has only one meaning: accompany a couple in love as to preserve their morality :)
