supposed to be the lingua franca, how come there's no word in English for
lingua franca?

The name "lingua franca" in Latin literally means "Frankish language," (West Germanic language) and has come to mean any language used by speakers of different languages to communicate with one another. How about the more English sounding: bridge language or working language or vehicular language?
