In relation to our second topic, Education, I remember having particularly enjoyed the first two chapters of Hard Times, by Charles Dickens (the second one significantly entitled “Murdering the Innocents”). Mr. Thomas Gradgrind, a man of facts, and the little Sissy Jupe; what a bitter contrast!
I even used it once in class to illustrate an explanation about the positivist worldview which arose in the nineteenth century.
